About this programme item

A group show by nonprofit Our Cape Town Heritage, featuring artists Ni-shaat Bardien and Shalner Ching, is curated by Head Curator Aaliyah Ahmed. The exhibition explores the duality of being broken while also being in the process of becoming—a tension between rapture and reconstruction. Bardien and Ching look at domestic objects and remnants to reconstruct a public history. Doilies, bath sheets, remnants of curtain netting, and fishing net—materials that once served practical purposes—are reconfigured, taking on new functions: not of utility, but of memory and resistance. Discover the rich history and significance of the textile and garment industry in Cape Town through OCTH Digital Archive Research Library (DARL), honouring the essential contributions of women’s labour to Cape Town’s development.

The exhibition is presented in collaboration with The Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation, a non-profit established to preserve and extend the legacy of Archbishop Desmond Mpilo Tutu and his wife Nomalizo Leah Tutu by nurturing courageous moral leadership, fostering healing from discrimination and conflict, and supporting programmes for societal justice and compassion.

A Fundraising Walkabout for OCTH takes place on Saturday, 6 December 2025, from 10:00 am, with an enlightening talk by author Nadia Kamies, followed by an exploration of the curatorial, artwork, and research. Every ticket is automatically entered into a draw for prizes valued at over R8,500. Tickets are available on Quicket at R120.
