Works by Stellenbosch local, Catherine Groenewald
Catherine Groenewald
Catherine is a versatile creative who loves to write, illustrate, and paint. She describes herself as a life-survivor who has learned to lean on and trust an all-loving, all-powerful Creator God. Her hope is that her work reflects and celebrates this profound truth. She has written and illustrated numerous children’s books addressing themes such as parental loss, grief, HIV/AIDS, and more. Currently, Catherine is illustrating a children’s picture book for Jacana Media, the publishers of Madam and Eve. With a keen eye for portraiture, she has completed various commissioned works for clients, including renowned South African artist Kaffe Pretorius, as well as the patriarch and matriarch of Delheim Wine Farm, Spatz and Vera Sperling. Of her portraits, she says, “Each one has been an exploration into the heartbeat of the person’s soul. Such joy.”While Catherine has painted many landscapes over the years, it is the Valley of Jonkershoek in Stellenbosch that continually draws her back. It is among these childhood mountains—where she has experienced grief, loss, floods, depression, and more—that the true story of Catherine unfolds.
