About this programme item

This body of work emerges from an open-ended question—one rooted in personal lineage, ancestral knowledge, and the ongoing process of becoming. In Waar bloed nie loop nie, Mellaney Roberts explores themes of home, identity, land, heritage, and the collective memory of the Baviaanskloof Coloured community. Through sculptural and installation-based works, Roberts builds on an earlier practice that navigates the intersection of tangible and intangible memory, examining how absence and silence—especially those of lost or forgotten voices—shape presence and meaning. Drawing from fragmented histories, memories, and untold stories, she weaves together a narrative of remembrance and reclamation.

In this series, Roberts positions herself not only as an artist but also as an archaeologist—an active member of her community, searching for answers. Clay, her primary medium, is both sacred and deeply personal. It serves as a vessel for memory, embodying the tension between permanence and fragility, much like memory itself. Through this material, she delves into the layered histories held within the land and its people, exploring belonging, ancestry, and cultural ties long buried.

Waar bloed nie loop nie invites viewers to journey through these metaphorical landscapes—spaces where ancestral bloodlines linger in silence, and where clay becomes a powerful conduit for identity and connection.

The exhibition is on display from 28 June to  24 August 2025.
