Tuesdays with Sue
Janet Smith, Martine Hulley, Jen Hill, Cheryl Bauer, Kate Judge, Sue Orpen ( art teacher) Helen van Vlaanderen, Blanche Stephenson, Alison Kohler, Sue Dennis and Alice Skinner
Susan Orpen recently relocated to the Cape from Gauteng, where she is a well-known professional artist and teacher. Upon settling in Rondebosch, she was delighted to discover a small group of people eager to learn watercolour. And so, the Tuesday Group began at the end of 2023 in Cheryl Bauer’s Maidstone Studio.
What started as a small gathering has quickly grown into a full and enthusiastic class — all committed, curious, and eager to share both the joys and challenges of working in watercolour. Along the way, not only has their skill and confidence developed, but strong friendships have formed.
The 11am tea break has become a lively ritual, filled with animated conversations about books, art, hiking, baking, gardening, fynbos, and the varied experiences of life.
For many of the artists in the Tuesday Group, this exhibition marks their very first public showing. The works on display reflect their personal responses to the world around them and their growing mastery of the intricate, expressive techniques of watercolour.
