About this programme item

"All the works in Studies in the Sun are studio paintings, created from photographs I have taken. The photographs serve as a starting point, but the goal is always to improve upon them: simplifying forms, emphasizing light, and allowing paint itself to carry the emotion of the moment.

I am particularly drawn to painting children and their instinctive joy in water, moments where light, movement, and innocence come together naturally. These everyday scenes allow me to explore both atmosphere and narrative, capturing fleeting gestures under strong light.

My work is accurate, descriptive, and grounded in realism. The colours are true and natural, yet I deliberately pursue an impressionistic, painterly quality through expressive brush and knife marks. This balance between realism and painterliness allows the paintings to move beyond photographic reference, aiming instead to distil and heighten the essence of the scene."
