Sithi iGalz - We are the girls
Sichumile Adam
Sithi iGalz when translated from Xhosa, means We are the girls and is a playful twist on the words City Girls. Sichumile Adam reimagines a space where femininity becomes a means to express and explore sexuality and autonomy, while also challenging the stereotypes that surround Black girlhood.
"Too often, we are viewed through the lens of promiscuity—subject to imposed notions of respectability that deny young Black girls the freedom to explore their sexuality as a pathway to self-discovery and personal agency." The holders of this rebellion - the Baddies, the Sithi gals - embody an authentic and unapologetic reclamation of Black girlhood in a society that so often seeks to define on its own terms.
The exhibition opens on First Thursdays and is on display from 3 to 31 July 2025.
