Rumble: The Body Entangled
Alexia Smit
About this programme item
The exhibition’s title, Rumble, serves as a dual metaphor, referring simultaneously to a physical confrontation and a deep, vibrating pressure seeking release. Smit employs this tension to explore the friction between inner experience and the social self, utilising images of women physically grappling with one another.
Through a distinctive ferocity of mark-making, these paintings revel in the muscle, force, and weight of women’s bodies. Smit’s works remain intentionally ambivalent , teetering on a line between aggression and tenderness.
On view in the Mezzanine Gallery until 23 April 2026
This exhibition was made possible thanks to the support from the National Arts Council.
