Place is the third instalment of the Art from Archives project where third-year fine art students from Stellenbosch University are exposed to collections in the Dutch Reformed Church Archives, where their research and engagement with the source material culminates in an exhibition in their fourth year.

For this exhibition, students were presented with archival material concerning Afrikaners who emigrated to Chubut province in Argentina following the South African War, from 1902 onward.

Curators Amy Rommelspacher and Kathryn Smith note that this exhibition “grapples with describing, defining and discovering ‘place’ and poses questions such as “what does it mean to call a place home?” And “what are we willing to risk for a place?”
