About this programme item

EBONY/CURATED presents Modern Masters VII, the seventh instalment of the annual series highlighting modern art from Southern Africa created before the turn of the century. This varied exhibition explores themes and narratives from well-known and lesser-known South African artists, focusing on mid-century abstraction, the representation of the traditional and urban landscape and life in the townships. Highlights include a series of works on paper by David Phaswane Mogano from the 1980’s and paintings by George Diederick During, who focused on the depiction of city and rural labourers from the 1940’s – 70’s. The gallery is delighted to include Erik Laubscher’s ‘Euphorbias’ painted in 1956 and considered one of the artist's seminal works from this period.
