Matriarchs
Pam Friedman in collaboration with Nespresso
Matriarchs, a solo exhibition by Pam Friedman in collaboration with Nespresso, pays tribute to eight extraordinary women whose courage, compassion, and conviction have shaped history across continents and generations. From the sacred texts of Jewish tradition to the royal courts and resistance movements of Southern Africa, these women emerge as powerful symbols of both spiritual depth and political strength. Opening in celebration of the start of Women’s Month in South Africa, the exhibition honours the legacy and continued influence of women who have led with resilience and purpose. Each piece in the collection is crafted entirely from used Nespresso pods, transforming everyday waste into tactile expressions of reverence. These works are more than visual artworks; they are meditative offerings, honouring the spiritual lineage of women who came before us. Every capsule carries a story, and together, they weave a tapestry of presence, perseverance, and quiet grace. Through this body of work, Friedman invites viewers into a space of reflection, to see not only what is visible, but also what is deeply felt.
