The Maggie Laubser at 140 exhibition is a celebration of Maggie Laubser’s life and work. Born on the 14th of April 1886, she grew up in Malmesbury and died in 1973 at the age of 78. She attended boarding school at Bloemh of Girls’ Seminary in Stellenbosch, where she was introduced to the art of drawing. She is generally considered, along with Irma Stern, to be responsible for the introduction of Expressionism to South Africa.

She bequeathed ‘all paintings in my house at the time of my death’ to Stellenbosch University, together with furniture and household effects and the remainder of her estate and legacy to the University, this special relationship is reflected in the Maggie Laubser at 140 exhibition.
