About this programme item

Eclectica Contemporary is proud to announce its participation in the second edition of HEAT Festival, taking place from 6 to 16 August 2025. As part of the programme, the gallery will present two solo exhibitions by Cape Town-based artists Sahlah Davids (b. 1998, South Africa) and Rory Emmett (b. 1992, South Africa). Rory Emmett’s practice begins with a powerful provocation: What might a world without race look like? His paintings explore this question not by denying identity, but by challenging the fixed narratives that often define it. By deliberately erasing faces—drawn from found and family photographs—Emmett invites viewers to consider how identity can be seen, felt, or remembered beyond the limits of racial categorisation.Rendered in layered shades of grey, his work navigates the in-between: shadow and light, nostalgia and possibility. Here, grey becomes a site of speculation—a liminal space where binaries dissolve and new understandings of presence take form.

A walkabout with both artists will be held on 9 August from 10am to 11am.
