ECHOES OF WHAT REMAINS
Elgin Rust
Echoes of What Remains is a collage of framed, tinted cyanotype prints, each one original, unique, and variable in size. The source material is discarded plastic water bottles, collected with the help of my neighbourhood and repurposed through experimentation. This sense of community and exchange is something I hope to carry through the work and beyond.
The making process is layered and unpredictable. Before exposure, I tinted archival paper and cotton fabric with beetroot, carrot, and turmeric. After exposure, the prints were bleached and/or stained with coffee, green tea, and acorns. Some were wet-processed, while others were double sun-exposed, allowing each image to emerge as a unique gift of the moment.
These natural materials stand in contrast to the industrially produced plastic bottle, one of the major found in fish, drinking water, and ultimately within us.
Transforming something discarded and potentially harmful into something precious and beautiful is an act of renewal that continues to inspire and motivate my practice.
