At the core of Marieke’s artmaking processes lies the notion of mutuality, the exchanges of empathy we practice and live with persistence, sometimes with ease, often with difficulty, but always to grow, to learn, to think and understand, to feel, and to cope with the transformations that such mutual exchange inevitably enacts or inflicts. This manifests in extra-large charcoal drawings that dwarf the space they occupy, leading to an experience of entering the work viscerally. These pieces need to be experienced to be believed, they are as arresting as they are haunting.
