About this programme item

BEGINNINGS is an exhibition by a trio of artists – printmaker and potter Lucy Stuart-Clark, painter and potter Jane Young and graphic artist, Robin Stuart-Clark. Jane and Lucy have exhibited together previously, this time the three are en famille.

Lucy exhibits a series of mixed media artworks with ceramic sculptural works. She works intuitively allowing the clay or substrate to determine form or composition. Influences include Greek sculpture and ceramics, medieval iconography and Dutch memento mori. Current international political developments – e.g. migration – provide inspiration for innovative and meaningful visual exposition.

Jane has created large ceramic platters and vases plus a series of 30 place settings – dinner and side plate and dessert bowl. Look ahead to the Beginnings Dinner. Individual place settings are decorated by all three artists. Fascinated by ancient frescoes and mosaics, Jane balances the functional and non-functional with a love of materials and the process of shaping clay. Her work is playful in attitude, free and painterly, accepting chance as part of the process but with an excellence in craftsmanship.

Robin exhibits a series of collages, a Pictorial Souvenir of an Expedition to Urduhsus, a newly discovered planet behind the Sun, and a collection of mixed media artworks Robin’s Guide to Prehistory. Heads and Tales, a graphic sequence of portrait heads poses the question What is Art? Limited edition books, on order, support the artworks.
