About this programme item

As the Cape Town air turns crisp and the light over Table Mountain softens into a golden hue, ClayLabCT transforms to reflect the shifting season. Autumn is perhaps the most “ceramic” of all seasons it is a time of cooling, grounding, and returning to the hearth.

Here is how the spirit of autumn is woven into the gallery experience:

A warm palette of glazes inspired by the falling oak leaves around Cape Town suburbs burnt oranges, deep ochres, and fading yellow and green tones will highlight the window display. Unglazed terracotta pieces capture the raw, honest transition of the season, reminding us that there is profound beauty in drying, ageing, and slowing down.

While most galleries say “don’t touch”, visitors are invited to feel the deliberate weight of a stoneware mug or bowl, the “chatter marks” left by a potter’s tool, where a slight slump in a vessel or a crackle in the glaze isn’t a flaw, but a story of the kiln’s fire.

Whether a seasoned collector or a curious passerby, all are welcome.
