After the Tide
Thirza Scaap
About this programme item
Working with plastic collected from coastlines, Dutch artist Thirza Schaap constructs temporary sculptural arrangements that exist only long enough to be photographed.
For centuries, still-life painting preserved what was fleeting. After the Tide turns its attention to the material that refuses to disappear.
The photographs draw us in through colour, balance and composition before revealing that these carefully arranged forms are assembled from the discarded residue of everyday consumer life.
In Schaap's hands, the still life becomes an archaeology of the present.
