First Thursdays is a public event and free to attend. Art galleries and cultural events around Cape Town's central city stay open until 9pm or later on the first Thursday of every month, allowing anyone to explore the city on foot and experience the cultural wealth this city has to offer. There is no tour, schedule, or guided walk; that is up to you. We simply help you figure out what to see and where to go by highlighting what is happening.

  1. Browse exhibitions, performances, and other events on our highlights page.
  2. Familiarise yourself with locations using our Google map (link in the navigation).
  3. Decide where you'd like to start.
  4. Invite old friends, new friends, family, colleagues or do it on your own.
  5. Grab a printed map at your first stop.

First Thursdays is spread throughout the central city but primarily along the axes of Bree and Church Streets. We recommend taking the MyCiTi Bus or cycling if you can. If you're driving, park near to where you think you might end up. Park on Riebeeck Square or find street parking in the area. Don't stress yourself out trying to find parking on the doorstep of where you want to go. We'd recommend parking a little bit further away and enjoying the walk.

First Thursdays takes place throughout the year (except for January) no matter what the weather is doing. If it's cold and rainy, layer up, toughen up, and bring an umbrella. You'll appreciate what is inside even more.

Cape Town's central city is generally safe to walk around thanks to the presence of other people ("eyes on the street") and the good work of the Central City Improvement District (CCID). Just don't be careless and don't leave valuables visible in your car.

Save the CCID's 24hr emergency number on your phone: 082 415 7127

You'll be crossing lots of streets on First Thursdays, and although we're very pro-pedestrian, please respect other road users and look before you cross.
