First Thursdays is an initiative whereby art galleries and other cultural attractions stay open late on the first Thursday of every month. It makes art galleries accessible by staying open outside of work hours, but more importantly it's a novel social experience with thousands of people exploring the city by foot at night.
Originally inspired by a similar concept in London, First Thursdays was started by Gareth Pearson and Michael Tymbios in Cape Town in November 2012, with the Johannesburg edition running since May 2015.
First Thursdays is as much about urbanism and city space as it is about art and culture...
We started First Thursdays as a side project, but now lead the initiative more formally as The Thursdays. We met on the streets of Cape Town riding bicycles, and that love of streets materialised in the form of First Thursdays. Gareth is an entrepreneur and urbanist at heart, and Michael is a graphic designer. The Thursdays is represented in Johannesburg by our karate kid Nati Kgobe.
We're increasingly working on associated projects and initiatives at the intersection of culture and urbanism, building on our unique combination of experience, skills, and network.
